The Imperial Cult: Faith or Propaganda?

The deeper I dig into Roman history, the more I see the trend in blurred lines between religion and politics. Looking at the early Roman Empire, political authority and religious practice became increasingly intertwined through what modern scholars call the Imperial Cult. The system they put into place encouraged people across the empire to honour the emperor in ways that looked strikingly religious. They were honoured with temples, priesthoods, and sacrifices, raising the question: was this genuine belief, or carefully managed propaganda?

Parallel Beliefs: Mithras and Early Christianity in Rome

In the vast expanse of the Roman Empire, there was more than one belief system. It was more in-depth, layered, and eventually two salvation-focused religions emerged within the same cultural landscape: the cult of Mithras and early Christianity. But why did Christianity endure while Mithraism declined despite their similarities?

Ecstasy and Disorder: Why The State Feared the Cult of Dionysus

Learning Deliberately: Why This Journal Exists

For the longest time, I have justified scrolling on my phone. Lying around, procrastinating tasks, ignoring the washing up that keeps piling up in the kitchen...

Ten minutes of TikTok would easily turn into forty... then an hour... then three. A slightly interesting video would lead to another, and another, and by the end of it I would be watching shit posts and poorly constructed edits with Subway Surfers covering the bottom half of the screen. If I'm lucky, I might come away with a minuscule piece of useful information, which typically is not well retained.

I began noticing this quiet frustration growing; time kept passing me by, and I wasn't doing anything practical with it.

The turning point came when I happened across a video by 'urfriendsteph' on TikTok. She is like-minded in that she is bored and has not really been applying herself in a productive way, so she started documenting short, focused 30-minute research sessions on different topics. There was something about this that called to me. It was simple, yet effective. Choose a subject. Set a timer. Research intentionally. Summarise what you have learned. The only thing missing? Keeping the information in a structured format, rather than a notebook that I might misplace in a few days.

This blog begins as an attempt to reclaim that misused time into something structured, useful and cognitively challenging. Instead of consuming endless, fragmented information, I want to practice selecting a topic, exploring it properly, and organising my thoughts into something coherent. Obtaining the research and putting it to use, which in turn, should also help me retain the information in a structured way.

This is by no means an academic publication, nor is it intended to be. I am not an expert on any matter posted here; this is simply a tool used to collate my findings and hold myself accountable for discipline.

Each week, I plan on choosing a central theme to explore and research through the format of short essays. The goal is not perfection or total understanding of the topic, but instead engagement and less time spent doomscrolling and absorbing otherwise useless information. Writing and researching force clarity. Collating information forces understanding. Revisting it later will allow for reflection and potential improvement.

As the world continues to try to focus on short, high-energy content, this space will allow me to be slower and more deliberate. It is easy to scroll. It's harder to sit with a subject and think.

This journal, or blog, exists to practice the latter.

If nothing else, it will serve as a record of my attempts, of questions asked, ideas tested and knowledge gradually gained and layered over time.

A small, but hopefully consistent act of ruthless curiosity.
